Pros? Cons? Found a used unit for $50 owner says it works but is not hooked up or able to test. Worth the gamble? Any input is appreciated. Build date 6 of 2007

Invest in a cigarette lighter plug with screw terminals on the end or just wire coming off the end of it. Take a cheap magnet mount antenna with you. Only takes a minute to hook everything up so you can test it for power up, receive and transmit. Definitely wouldn't buy without the minimum proof its worth even $50. No experience with that model but, Galaxy has a good rep and it's got SSB so, if working should be a decent deal.

I have a 959 that cost me around $175. A good little radio with lots of mods available. [Please login or register to view this link] I'd go for it as long as it powers up. And it's not made in Vietnam or China.

I snagged it up. It’s made in Malaysia. Gonna set it up this weekend hopefully and get rolling with it. I have a new cobra 29 in my truck and I’m happy with that so if this one works as good I’ll be pleased. I can pick up all sorts of skip with it just can’t talk back. I hear it every day on my ride home. Got a hour one way commute so plenty of time to fiddle around reading the mail.

I don't think you made a bad choice. Hope it is a working radio that hasn't had too many "golden screwdrivers" inside the case.

I opened up the radio and looked on the bottom side of the board and found this lil guy in there any ideas to what this is done for the screwdriver is pointing to the resistor. I’ll try to figure out how to post pics....

Hooked it up Friday in the truck for now. Works good transmits and receives. Was playing with LSB tonight and some locals were being kind of a-hole ish yelling back at me that I’m off frequency and to shut my garbled **Censored** up and get off their channel

whatever to them. I laughed and said good night then I’m gone.
I like the radio so far. Need to pick up a frequency counter for it too. Someone’s been in the radio as I found a resistor soldered to the bottom of the board. Been searching around to find what it could be to no avail. Still can’t post pics yet

It probably is "off frequency" since most Galaxy radios are like that. You will only notice it on SSB as AM can be as much as a "KC" off and it will sound fine to the receiving radio. Galaxy is a drifty radio, cold and heat both affect it. Best thing to do with them if your planning to run SSB a lot is to open the clarifier and get a good alignment. Once the clarifier is open the TX and RX will track together.
