Re: SWR meter
well, for a mobile that workman swr2t will be fine.
I use the Astatic as well, though.
My favorite for Base operation is Dosey.

Mike

Re: SWR meter
I use the Mfj-849 digital meter Which covers hf and vhf up to 200watts. It has one side for HF and one side for VHF a switch chooses between the 2.
I like being able to see SWR and forward and reflected power all in one glance.

Re: SWR meter
These days most of us use an "antenna analyzer" to adjust our antennas, I use my SWR/Watt meter just as a reference. As meter's go, it depends on how deep your pocket are.
I like the Daiwa CN-901HP. It is a nice size meter, dual needle, self adjusting, and has a nice mellow lighting. Only switches you have to do is the power and PEP/Avg. Daiwa has some nice older models you can find, the CN-801 models are very nice and can be gotten at a decent discount. nk14zp mentioned the Bird's, great meters at an extremely high price, every time I use mine, I here it go,,

Re: SWR meter
Like MDYoungblood said...I use a MFJ 259b antenna analyzer(which is a older analyzer) then I have a MFJ868b "Giant Face" meter to keep a eye on things (for the base)
In the mobile I dont keep a meter in line mainly because there's just no room for one in my Tacoma...When I had my Suburban I had Bird meters... and a cheap Radio Shack meter I use to keep in my work van that got the job done...But the meters were just for monitoring things, not for actually setting the SWR...

Re: SWR meter
I have a couple of the rf power scanner tipple meters too. Any of the above meters work great. Ham fests are a great place to find a bird at a good price. If all you have is a watt meter hooking it up backwards will show reflected watts.

I've been collecting aluminum cans to get a Array Solutions or TelePost Inc monitor.

Array Solutions is maybe 10 miles from me in Sunnyvale... I went there once to pick up a watt meter they had for sale, and one of the guys gave me a tour threw the facility...place is amazing...They do allot of work for the military and Nasa plus there's one heck of a HAM station set-up there.

Re: SWR meter
For a long time all I had was the ones from radio shack. In todays world you might find something at a local truck stop. If you are new you can start with the lower priced stuff. In fact most of us did lol.

Re: SWR meter
I still use one of those to check SWR in my mobile...used it all the time to set antennas too before I got my analyzer.nk14zp wrote: Nov 24 2019, 20:29 For a long time all I had was the ones from radio shack. I use my MFJ-259B antenna analyzer. It's not too fancy but it works.
