Powering a CB amp
This is coming from someone who knows nothing about amps, but I'm just going to assume that a power supply can be used to power a base station amp. Or do you just plug it into a 110v wall receptacle?
If the power supply is used what amp power supply would be used for a 200w amp?

I wouldn't run an amp that size on less than a 35 amp supply. Need more info on what brand amp you are looking at. Post a pic or link to the amps you are considering so we can help more.

I dont have one in mind right now. Just trying to get an idea of what it would take to power an amp.
But it will need a power supply, dedicated to the amp?

I use a Megawatt S-350 power supply with an RM KL 503 amp and I use a
Megawatt S-400 power supply with a Gray 300 amp.

Re: Powering a CB amp
True Base Amps usually have their own built-N power supply so all you have to do is plug it into the wall....But any mobile amp can be used with the right power supply...You would just need to find out what the MAX amp draw is on the amp your thinking about getting, then buy whatever power supply you need to power it...(fyi, power supplies can get pricey the bigger you go with the amp)
Personally I prefer the older tube amps...for the most part they can be had for cheap, and as long as you don't miss treat them, the tubes last forever.

Re: Powering a CB amp
like what was said, I use a mega watt to power my radio and a mega watt to power my mobile amps witch i us for base amps. The easiest is to have a base radio and a base amp.
Keep smiling ...It makes people wonder what your up too !

Re: Powering a CB amp
Just have to shop around, but Yes, they are pricey...but like I said, as long as you don't abuse them, they can last forever...Tubes in my Palomar 300A are the original ones, and the amp still does the same amount of power it did from the first day I hooked it up...I've had other issues with the box, like rectifier diodes going bad and a fuse holder that had to be replaced...but the tubes still glow bright and get plenty hot!
My back-up amp is a Kicker 500 which I did replace the tubes in it...Bought it off the auction site and it did work just as the seller said it would, but the tubes in it at the time were on their last leg...think I payed $100 for a set of 4 NOS tubes and brought the Amp back to life.

Re: Powering a CB amp
I like tube amps just like JJD, and yes they can get expensive.
Check out amps and then the power supplies needed to run it, the cost usually averages out to the cost of a decent tube amp, (beware of the junk on that auction site). You already have a base or a mobile/PS base setup so looking for about 200 watts, 295antenna and BlueOx2 suggestions are the best. The MegaWatt PS and a mid size RM Italy would be the ticket, using a mildly tuned radio the RM Italy will be fine on both AM and SSB.
