Board ground vs crystal
Board ground vs crystal
Hey all, i'm working on a hi-fi mod for my Cobra 29LTD Classic. And the last 2 lines of instruction are
9. Then run a wire from the the other relay coil terminal to ground
10. Solder a wire from - side of mono jack to board ground (You can solder it to a can).
I've done some searching on Google, and it seems a "can" is just a crystal. So is there any difference between going to a "can" vs going to board ground. Which now brings me to my other question. Where in the world is a board ground. Or can i just solder to the case???
Thanks all. Have a great 4th and be safe.

“Can” aka the case of one of the adjustments that has a metal case around it. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.
You should be safe to solder it to any of the metal cases surrounding an adjustment.

Correct... also a board ground is easy to find. Find one of the screws the holds the board to the chassis. Put one end of your meter there and the other where you want to solder to , you should get a continuity beep, if not don't ground there.
Good luck

You could use the can covering a load like paBullwinkle said but I wouldn't if this ground goes to something audio, it might create a feedback, audio mods should be connected in the audio section of the PCB.

But this is a 1/4 mono jack that i installed in the case. When i put my meter to the ground on the plug and the chassis. I get continuity. That wouldn't really be a good ground.nosaj wrote: Jul 03 2020, 18:33 Correct... also a board ground is easy to find. Find one of the screws the holds the board to the chassis. Stock Mic
1- Shield
2- Audio
3- Transmit
4- Receive
Could i use where the shield connect to the board? Is shield a ground

That's where i have trouble. I know just enough to get by, but i'm no tech by any means. Anyway you could point out where in the audio section it should be soldered to.MDYoungblood wrote: Jul 04 2020, 19:14 You could use the can covering a load like paBullwinkle said but I wouldn't if this ground goes to something audio, it might create a feedback, audio mods should be connected in the audio section of the PCB.

This is the audio amplifier location, should find a negative (ground) source there.

Just my luck, i don't have any diodes in that section. Closest i can find is D8.

Just stick with using on of the screws at the corner of the board that mount the board to the case. That's the safest thing to do. Your ground should be as short as possible that's why the cans were suggested. be sure the mounting screw is clean and tightened before you solder to it.

I ended up going to one of the cans. Now to get this thing talking.

Re: Board ground vs crystal
My 2 cents, I too would have looked for a PCB Chassis Mounting Screw for the ground.
When you use a Can or outer enclosure of another component, you have to go on a roundabout path, when using the PCB Mounting Screw, you have a more direct path to ground creating a smoother run for the current and maybe less induced noise.
Just MHO, I am not a Tech.
I have found when wiring other peoples Trucks with lighting, and new Radio/Amp Systems, or just to fix problems maybe just replace a component, people who used a little less direct grounding path have problem later on down the road, but when you have a direct path grounding you eliminate future problems.
Grounding can be such a PITA when not done efficiently !
