Tubes vs Transistor

Post by Gunner357 »

So some say tubes are better than Transistor? Im a techy guy I would say Transistor....In my opinion Tubes create more heat and are clean and are more forgiving Transistors are durable but slightly dirty...... any input?

I think tubes look better when they glow in the dark.

Transistors make tons of heat, that is why the heatsinks are so big, plus they really won't take a lot of abuse and mosfet"s even less. Then it comes to use, if you are like me, SSB'er, then the transistor amp needs to be biased, AM only on the other hand can go class C, but are they ever splattery.
Personally I like tubes, but I have both types of amps, (ham amps, not those CB things), biased, loaded with filters, band switch, load and plate, etc., tune to max output and back off a touch, the transistor amp is just set the band and adjust the ALC.
Can't tell you the last time I used them, was months ago, should fire them up just to keep the relay's from sticking.

Tubes for the base... transistors for the mobile...

Used tube boxs tend to be a little cheaper to buy compared to the same size transistor box...1000w tube box you can pick up on the auction site under $500...transistor box of the same size could run you almost double that, but least it would be New.
