New to site... what I got, and what Im thinkin about doin.
Ok just signed on today on the site. Heres my current rig. cobra 200 GTL, unlocked 11m band, and P&T. Its held up for a year now. The meter backlight comes and goes, but riding in a semi does that I figure. Ive gotten some DX with it, from Ohio to Oklahoma etc a few times. I do have some gripes though. I have to talk fairly loud in it even with the mic gain cranked to be heard it seems. I also notice sometimes I have aother driver nearby in the area talking, and the S meter is swinging real high, hes close and fairling strong, but yet I cant hear a thing. Sometimes I can faintly hear the other person. Bothers me at some customers, waiting to be called and I may or may not hear them. Been reading some comments about the 200GTL, and almost sounds this is all common. Anyone shed some light on this?
Now im thinking about a magnum S9 or S980, a Galxy 99, or something along those lines. Its a top of the dash strap mount. Cant run a linear.. company rules on that, well external anyways, lol. Any input, suggestions etc?

When the people are really close turn you RF gain down. That should solve the overloaded receive...or so it did on mine.
Your modulation doesn't sound right though. I'm assuming you are running it on high power all the time? I had my wattage turned down on mine to allow for better modulation and drive my amps. My radio peaks at about 160%, and nominally 110-120% with the stock mic and mic gain at about 11 o-clock. With the D104 on there (which is what I typically run) it merely cleans up the mod some to be crisp. Can't remember ever having a modulation issue where I had to talk loud though no matter which mic I had on there.
Mine has worked fine for the most part though. Oh...and welcome to the forum.

I normally run her on high all the time. Tonite sitting in laredo, I got on there, and people heard me further out with it on low, then on high. I do run my mic gain up all the way but never had anyone tell me I sounded bad, so Ive never messed with it. Ive toyed with my RF gain to try and correct the overload. Ive turned it down to the point it turned off all reception and didnt make any difference. I usually run it at the 8-9 oclock position. Could she be cooked since shes one of the 200s?
Ive looked and drooled over the 4600 turbo, but didnt like the absence of a frequency counter. I like the looks of the Magnum S-9 and S-980, but have heard from some sites the quality is iffy. Ive heard some about the Galaxy 95T2 as well. Hoping to get a radio that rides a little lower then this Cobra as well.

One thing about the Galaxy's, and the S9's...People who are primarily "Galaxy" owner's...aren't happy with the S9's. And visa-versa.
I have had some Unidens before, and they have great ears, but I'm also a Galaxy sorta guy, and rather have the Galaxy 93t over all the others...Because you can tune the DK down to as little as 1/2 a watt. And it works great with the smaller amp's that may be used as drivers.
I also have one of the earlier Galaxy 95t's (not the 95t2) And as a "stand-alone" radio, it's great! But Don't like the echo, or the high DK, that wont let you run the smaller amps, or drivers.
The S9 and Galaxy 95t2 thing, is sorta like a Chevy vs. Ford thing... Most like one or the other, but not both radios....

Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
The Galaxy 48T is also a great choice and is a little easier on the pocket book, but if you like having a freq meter the 95T is the one I would suggest. I have an 48T now and love it, but miss the freq meter, so next week I'm odering a 95T SWP from RadioActive. Call one of the sponors here and tell them your a member and they will hook you up with special pricing.
Ok, think I figured out some of my radio's reception problems. Noticed today going thru big D, was getting a big swing on the meter but could barely hear anyone, but its sunday so not alot of air traffic. Jumped down 4 channels, and found the talker, bleeding from 15 into 19. Some radios better at filtering this crap out? I still want something a little lower profile then this one, and its heatsink, in how its designed.

The Stryker is a little better at fitering out bleedover. But wont help filter out that bunch on channel 15! Just too many "Splatter-Box's" there...I know alot of these guys, and they volt and push their equipment right to the breaking point.bigtwinlvr wrote:Ok, think I figured out some of my radio's reception problems. Also, on the heatsink, I'm not sure how the heatsink is set-up on the 200, but on the Galaxy 93t, General Lee, and Stryker, it's small, and on the back of the radio. The 93t has a couple of small fans bolted to the heatsink, but they realy dont add much to the length of the radio...

I was over on the SE side where we have a yard, but am running up to chattanooga, nashville, thru ky, on up to Gary, milwaukee, greenbay etc.. Wont know my next mission destruction until the 16th most likely. I know of the cb shop in kingdom city, mo, at the Petro, and theres Paul in Tulsa at the truck wash with his shop. Other then that, dunno of the good ones, just a few to avoid. I had to go wander around Stone mountain, and Duluth, Ga this am. Man I hate traffic here!lol
well since your going to the UP you most likely wont be running 94, but if you are here in Michigan at X 130 in Parma there's a little truck stop (citgo) next to the strip joint that has a good radio shop in it. its called BOOMERS. hes a good guy to deal with and hes good on prices too. maybe on you swing back down if you can go down 75 to 94 or something might wanna check him out. hes not open on weekends, well at least he didn't use to be. but hes a good HONEST guy. he also does out side work as long as it ain't freezing out side. hes a good guy and i have let him work on my radios and i have also bought parts from him for my radios.
P.S. if your around the Battle Creek area ever holler out for Boss Hog. if i am in the pickup, or in the big truck ( blue "Triple G Transport" FLD flat top) i always have it on.

I have a friend who said there is a shop in Snellville. I do know that the petro up north 85 has one in it. 128 ? I never could remember the yard stick.
I have a job going in duluth. I was there earlier.
Usualy I find that ordering online is easier for me. You dont have to worry about where to go, it shows up at my door step. If I need repairs or warranty, box it up and stick it in the mail. If you buy at a radio shop somewhere and have a problem, when will you be back that way again to get it looked at and then they will want you to leave it. Much easier to order from RadioActive, EastCoast, Sparkys, Etc. Get what you want with no fuss.

I own a SWP Connex 4600 Turbo and its one killer radio. Dont have ssb but then again I own several radios that have it and I dont use it. Never had a ssb contact. I do like the freq meter but you can plug one into the connex if you want it. I look at it like this, when you are driving are you gona look ata freq meter to see what freq you are on ? Are you gona talk DX while driving ?
My way of thinkin is no so why have the clutter. I have the connex in one of my work trucks but I use to have it in mine. I wanted more power ( Like I realy needed it ) and so I now run a Galaxy 99v with a east coast 2X4 hooked up. With all that, I dont realy notice much difference on the road and I havent had any DX contacts with the mobile.
