K40 4-pin mic to President 6-pin radio

#404046

Post by romad »

I'm trying to find an adapter that will let me use my K40 mic with my new President Bill radio. I have schematics of both model mics and a pinout table:

**Non Sponsor** says their **Non Sponsor Link** will work but when I sent them the pinout table they never replied again. Has anyone used this adapter and if so can I get a confirmation of the continuity between the pin numbers?

Then there is this style **Non Sponsor Link**
Anyone have one of these and can do a continuity check between the pins in the table?

I doubt seriously if either of those adapters will work, the K40 mic needs a phantom voltage to operate because it has a electret microphone element, those adapters do not. They are to use a 4 pin Cobra/Galaxy/Uniden wired microphone.
Best solution is to rewire the K40 mic using a 6 pin plug but I am not sure how to get the voltage that the radio has to the element nor do I know what the best voltage is. Think there were topics in the past about this, might try a search.

Pin 6 out of the President Bill will be the voltage needed to power a electret mic element,
But in the K40 Speech Processor Mic Schematic posted by Romad, I only see 5 wires needed going to 4 pin's. Here is the K40 mic wiring book off cb trick's for further info.

I don't see why the (non sponsor) cable you listed wouldn't work, I'd ohm check the pin's in your pin out table before hooking up.
But there again, is this K40 mic only going to be used on your President Bill?
If the answer is yes, Then do as Greg say's and wire it up to a 6 pin plug.
Pin 1, White (Audio)
Pin 2, Blue (Receive)
Pin 3, Red (TX) PTT
Pin 4, NA
Pin 5, Shield and Black
Pin 6, NA
Personalty i'd put a short piece of heat shrink tubing over pin 6 and shrink it. Make sure nothing touches this wire, or even remove the terminal or break it off on the radio side of the plug.
Hope this help's.

Interesting, except the K40 Mic schematic doesn't have a voltage source indicated on it. I'm guessing the voltage is applied through the XMIT pin 2? I'll have to look at the K40 radio schematic to see if a voltage is applied there. On the President mic I'm guessing the +vdc comes in on pin 3, correct?

No, I wanted to use the K40 because it doesn't require a mic bracket, just a place for the magnet to use. I guess I'll stick with the President mic for now.

The +VDC Voltage is at pin 6, for the President Mic, Romad.
I didn't see a voltage source in your diagram eather and Negitive on voltage applyed through the Xmit pin 2. Looking at your diagram, if pin 2 was voltage and you would key the mic it would short to the shield through the ptt switch.

Pin 2 on the K40 is directly connected to the anode of diode 1N4001 so it should be +vdc.

Looking at the schematic of the K40 mic, it looks like pin 5 has the voltage on it and only when transmitting, pin 6 on the Uniden is constant voltage so it would short to ground on receive. JMO.

Negitory. Pin 2 goes through the PPT switch 1st, Then to the diode.

Wrong. The anode of the diode is connected to the wire from pin 2 BEFORE the PPT switch.
