Cobra DX IV / General Q's on dead key RMS and PEP with mods

Hey guys.. I have an inability to be short.. but I'll try my best.. just want to put and possibly receive as much input as possible.. but general short response is more than welcome.. here's the scenario..

I titled this topic in an attempt to drag attention other than the "DX IV" do to it not being a popular radio.. and it may possibly be helpful to others seeking information pertained in this topic/post.. (via search or w/e in future).

here it goes.. I'm not new to electronics at all.. but I do get caught up on things from time to time.. and I usually exhaust methods and seek the info on my own.. but I am going out on a limb and asking other educated in the field and perhaps engineers perspective (and/or obviously the highly knowledged/skilled) .. as I have pondered this for a bit as I've been doing radios and the potential issue I'm dealing with..

RMS vs PEP isn't really what I'm seeking I don't think..

I've done a mod to the radio to bring down the dead key.. yeh works.. roughly 25 ohm and a cap.. got me at 2 watt RMS swinging only about 3 RMS.. but surely yes swings to nearly 9 if I recall PEP..

during this (obviously the limiter has been clipped etc..) I'm like well ya know I'll see what the deal is as I'm not getting no where near 4 RMS on swing.. and it hit me to just go ahead and see how it would work straight up.. installed a switch.. and sure enough.. 5-6 watts RMS dead key.. no swing really.. but PEP swinging over 10 easily..

I mean it makes sense that the resistor in series would restrict - for lack of better word.. is there something about such mod I'm missing where I'd get the same peak as without the resistors in series.. is there power isolation or something that generally goes on .. or something of the like..

.. details..

Cobra 19 DX IV (4)

Power Mic..
No real tuning just turn the modulation pot up..
Limiter Clipped..
Installed Cap /
Installed 100 ohm resistors til dead key was around 2 watts.. (4) = 25 ohms
1/2 watt each.. so I guess I'm pushing the marker at 2 watt power wise in resistors.. (didn't think this would matter ?)
..

the radio sounds excellent I'm pleased.. but the lack of pep swing compared to no reduction of DK is where I'm throwed for a bit of a loop..

sorry I apologize.. I'll get on with my life..
