I usually cut the mic gain back to between 1 & 3 O'clock with the amp, and about 3-4 O'clock barefoot, but I am learning that my 1 watt deadkey has not been getting along with my amps lately. So be careful about just copying my settings.
On my SWP G Lee, the needle is a pretty good indicator. If it is just barely bumping the right side of the meter, or just going into the red zone a bit, it sounds very clear.
If I crank up the mic gain all the way with the RK 56, the needle stays pegged, and it overmodulates. My 636L barely gets to the red zone with the mic gain turned all the way up.
I had good luck with simply turning down the mic gain until radio reports came back clear. Some peoples radios, and some peoples ears can't tell the difference though.
I get the most accurate radio tests when I can find a willing base station. Especially one that has taken the time to make his sound good, and he has to have a good external type speaker, or a very good internal one.
Start talking and turn the mic gain down until the audio fades, and then back up until it overmods. I usually say something like...This is what it sounds like a 3 O'clock, ...4 O'clock, etc so the listener can give you accurate feedback on where the mic gain was, when he heard a change. Then operate in the "sweet spot". I seemed to have to change mic gain when the amp was on vs. barefoot.
I'll have to see is that stays true when the DaveMade, and the Galaxy 45MP arrive.

It has a lot to do with how loud you talk, and how big your voice is. My voice tends to move microphone elements alot. Even on the walkie-talkies at work, my voice is very loud, even though I talk low.
back to CB's
It's extra points to smash a Mud-Duck while using your "inside voice"! 8)
I like to turn the mic gain kinda high and talk fairly low. If you have a big voice, and you talk loud, you may need to cut the mic gain back even more. See if your meter needle lines up with "clear" on radio checks.
If you have a deep voice, the 636L will sound cleaner. I have to hold the RK56 on the side of my mouth to avoid breath noise.

Or, you can call your RK56 "defective" and sell it to me really cheap....

Another way that I tried was to watch the watt meter after the amp. Find where mic gain reductions starts to reduce power output while talking, and operate just above that. That's how I found out that the meter on my G Lee is a pretty accurate indicator.
But, be careful about using the on board G Lee meter on every radio. They are very cheap meters and I hear that they can vary alot from one to the other.

My computer just ran out of letters to type  ...I'll go out and buy a letter refill kit now....

WELL LIKE I SAID IVE TRIED THE RK56 AND FOLKS SAY ITS LOUD AS HECK BUT NOT AS CLEAN AS THE 636. BUT I HAVE TO PUT MY MIC GAIN AT BOUT 1 O'CLOCK OR I GET A BUNCH OF BACKGROUND NOISE MY OLE BLAZER IS LOUD ON THE INSIDE THO.

NOW WHEN I RUN MY MIC GAIN ALL THE WAY UP IM STILL NOT OVER MODULATED THEY SAY AND IT SOUNDS CRYSTAL CLEAR IF IM SITTIN STEAL AND IM AFRAID IM GUNA BEND MY METER NEEDLE WHEN THE MIC GAIN IS ALL THE WAY UP IT SLAPS OVER SO HARD  EVEN WITH MY MIC GAIN AT 1 O'CLOCK IT STILL GOES ALL THE WAY OVER JUST NOT AS SPRATICTLY AS WHEN ALL THE WAY UP :? EVERYONE TELLS ME ITS STILL LOUD AND PROUD FOR SURE WITH GAIN AT 1O'CLOCK SO I GUESS THATS WERE ILL CONTINUE TO RUN IT.

ILL DO SOMEMORE EXPERIMENTIN WITH THE RK56 AND KEEP YA POSTED ON HOW IT WORKS OUT FOR ME. THANKS STBR :D
