still struggling with noise
Okay, I ran my power wire to the battery and ran my ground to a nice shiny bolt on my chassis. however, I still get tons of ignition noise when I start my tuck and accelerate. I am forced to adjust with the RF and squelch knobs. It is a 1994 Chevrolet Silverado with a fuel injected 305. Any suggestions? Thanks

You should both neg and positive to the battery. If you are picking up all your line noise through the power cord (take off the antenna and listen, if no noise, then yes it is..) one extreme method is to shield both lines and ground the shield. Or, use two pieces of coax, use the center conductors for the power, and ground the shields.
Noise through the antenna is much harder to solve

Yes she's right and ground everything you can. The best thing to use is grounding strap, aka old coax that you don't use anymore and flatten it with a hammer and the put ends on it and screw it down.Tucson Annie wrote:I think I mentioned before that when we installed my little Uniden 520 we tried grounding it on every bolt and piece of metal we could find. The engine whine was unbearable no matter where we did it.....that is, until we ran it to the battery....problem was instantly solved!

Yup, the shortest route to ground is a wire to the negative battery terminal. You would think otherwise, but that is the case.Tucson Annie wrote:I think I mentioned before that when we installed my little Uniden 520 we tried grounding it on every bolt and piece of metal we could find. If grounding the rig, running quality cables to the battery don't work, you also can start grounding body panels, and the exhaust.

update
i ran both cables to the battery directly, and have much improved results. I installed a noise filter/clipper in-line and have virtually NO noise at all now. thanks everyone!
