I got a DRAKE TR4-C i need to have converted for use on 11 meters and try that thing out i was
told by the guythat gave it to me that it will DK or as he called it HARDKEY 100 watts bird watts
and im guessing modulate to 200 watts shouldnt be to bad for a base radio its just it has that stupid
VFO for the freq and it im thinkin will be a pain in the crack dialing in to them freq's when skip
is throwin down goin from freq to freq so i havent really been tryin to hard to get it done but will
eventually be sumpn neat to tinker with when im bored.

im setup to run all tube in the house. ive got a couple maco tube boxes, ive got a browning that im in the prosess of rebuilding(read learning as i go..lol) and a few tube radios.... there is just something about tubes that amazes me. for instance take your comon everyday 6ql6. thats a comon recive tube for televisions. take 6 of them with a good high voltage transformer and tune it right with the right drive and that **Censored** will do anywhere from 700-1k all day long. ill try to answer questions and give advice the best i can. if i dont know something ill ask my pop's..lol jas.

ps. all of my guitar amps are analog tube as well

duck comander, is the vfo a analog vfo or is it a digi tune vfo? the old analog vfo's with the grid knob are hard as hell to get spot on....if you wanna try a digi tune i think ive still got the one off my old couriour base....but im not home right now im at my other house in md....jas.

Note to self:: When shipping tube-based equipment do not forget to remove the tubes FIRST before shipping... They tend to come apart during transit... OOPS! (Ask AK295, he knows what I did!) Actually I had removed them once, but re-installed them to try and sell it locally, but forgot to remove them again before shipping it off.)

And it's not like you can just run down to the corner and pick up those particular tubes anymore...

i am fourtunate enough to have a guy 30mins a away that has a stock of about 15k tubes. if he dont got the tube i need then there is a good chance that you cant get it...its just a hobby to me but if i can share my knowlage with others then thats a plus..even if it is limited..lol jas

The properties and product produced by tubes is without question Superior it is unfortunate that us electronics manufactures were so quick to abandon the technology. nowadays more than ever the vacuum tube is very useful even along side and inconjuntion with digital components and in the near future you will see companies bringing tubes and the vacuum state back into specialized use especially in computers. Right now work is being done to develop a vacuum state processor for high end computers

Anyone with half a brain and at least one good ear knows that audio amplified with vacuum tubes has far better sound and more dynamic range than transistorized amps. Did you know that a lot radio station transmitters are still tube type especially the AM stations.

Some of the digital defects of current technology can be overcome by incorporating tubes for various applications in both radio transmission and audio processing not to mention as computers become more powerful and the architecture changes producing "louder" RF interference within a computer itself will become necessary for certain components to have more "padding" RF shielding to maintain reliable operation and one very useful property of vacuum tubes is their resistance to all types of potentially interfering radiation.

I am personally in they early development stage of something i will call the "micro-tube" but that is all i can tell you right now with out worrying about someone else beating me to to patent office. One day we will have common devices that use micro-tubes. Hopefully when a manufacturer is set up and tooled for making tubes they will also supply the demand for old tubes for the devices that us radio heads have to practically donate body parts to get for our radios,amps, and stuff.

BTW can anyone help me find these special tubes I'm looking for for my D&A maverick linear the tube is rare and expensive but one one the better ones. I'm pretty sure they are rectifying tubes the # is 6JG6A the D&A part # is RA-100 Very clean signal/audio from these tubes along with the other tubes in the amp that are the more common 6JE6C (6LQ6)
If anyone can find these tubes for me NEW they will be my best friend and i will be much obliged as I'm having great difficulty locating UNUSED 6JG6A tubes

off the top of my head the maverick's had 4 6lq6's on the output side and 3 or 4 6jg6a's on the driver side thats without looking at my book so dont take it as the gospel..lol. they were rated to do about 300 on the high side.... i can get them right now but its gonna cost ya...pm me...jas.

Just noticed a couple of references in this thread about 6je6c/6lq6's being "common". Wish I'd stocked up on these back in the day when TV's used sweep tubes, the last NOS one's I got were $57 per.........but still less than 3-500Z's. Can't wait till my SB-220 needs fed again.

Im not sure what it is i do know its very easy to turn it doesnt have clicks in it it just a smooth slide
that you turn in circles to dial in the freq you want

Like many responding to this post, I think tube radios sound better.

In the old days you could tell what rig someone was running by the unique key of the radio. The obvious - Browning "Squeal", and the not so obvious - Tram II "Slap". These radio had loud voices.

I like the old VFO tuning. Just more fun than a channel selector knob.

A suggestion if you ship a tube radio. Removing the tubes is an option, but packing the inside with newspaper (holds the tubes in position) works well too.

Greg Barkett of Barkett Electronics (Trinity, AL) works on these old rigs. He does a great job and his prices are fair. He owns what's left of the Browning Labs parts inventory. He works on pretty much any tube radio.
