OK i was using my radio today when all the sudden the talk back started to get REAL loud and was squealing. I've ran my talk back on from the time i got the radio and never had to turn the mic gain down. but now i have to turn the talk back off. to us the radio. could it be the external speaker or the talk back it self. if i disconnect the ext speaker its fine. :?

What's the point of a talkback? I know they're popular, but i can hear myself talk without the aid of my radio. I've heard the "I like to hear what I sound like" argument, but you still sound differently after you make it to their radio/receiver. Am I missing something here? I remember that when the Uniden HR2510 came out, it had a talk back and a mod to remove it couldn't come out fast enough. Anytime you wanted to have the modulation up to a respectable level, especially if using it as a base where the mic is close to the speaker, SQUEAL, and you had to turn it back down, what a pain. Clue me in here. I'm evidently missing out on something. -drdx

Talkback

I use a Cobra 200 GTL DX as my base and an old Realistic base w/o an antenna as my talkback. Simply plug in a set of headphones to the ex speaker and you can hear what you sound like with volume control...... through a radio and not the talkback.

I THINK IT'S WHATEVER ONE PREFERS! YOU DON'T NEED TO EXPLAIN WHY YOU HAVE IT ON OR OFF! THERE IS NO ARGUMENT TO IT! DO WHATEVER YOU FEEL IS BEST! AS FAR AS SQUEALING IT MAYBE THAT YOUR MIC IS TOO CLOSE TO THE RADIO!

well i thought that at first. when i disconnect the ext speaker it don't do it (chrome Texas ranger speaker). speaker is on the floor of my big truck in front of the gear shift so the speaker isn't to close (put speaker in a couple of different places to see)been running with out it and its like talking with an ear infection or being def just strange.

have you ever driven a big truck before? if you have then you know how noisy it can be. between the turbo, jake brakes (yes there necessary) ,and wind noise from poorly sealed windows. another example do you have any musical talent? its like a band being on stage and needing monitors to hear or a singer on stage needing a monitor so he or she can make sure that they are on key. see i have been singing in bands from the age of 14 so i guess that is part of the reason that i like my talk back. no I'm not part of the American CB idol crowd  again not an argument just more of why i think i like it.

I'm not here to stir it up that much, just wondering. I'm not a driver, and other than the couple of 300 mile trips in a moving truck with a radio, I don't have any experience with all of those noise factors. Wouldn't the talkback just add more noise to all that is going on? I guess I'd have to experience it to tell. I usually adjust for background noise by using my meters and then getting a report from someone else. Modulation, for me, is usually a set it and forget it deal, unless I've changed something. I do like having the ability to hear myself, as someone else mentioned, through another receiver. I used to do that when I regularly operated a base. That way, you could tell, through the receiver of another radio, if you were over doing it somewhere, or had muffled amp signal syndrome. Another benefit to that was that you could have the 2nd received hooked up to a horizontal antenna, so you could crank up the rf gain on it on the fly for enhanced receive. A dipole works for this well. It seems like that if you are listening to your audio through a talkback, it wouldn't let you know what you really sounded after the audio portion of your radio. I guess this more comes into play when using an amp. From a receiver standpoint, you're getting it all. Either way, this topic is just another that makes this hobby fun to discuss. -drdx

Clutch i really think what the problem is is that you just simply need to give me the speaker just ship it to me the speaker is not good for you hehehehehehe.

Naw really tho on my General Lee i had to turn the mic gain way back to be able to run the talkback so i sent it back to RA and had variable talkback installed and it works fine now no squell but i guess the talkback are just to loud in them things or sumpn cuz if i had my mic gain turned all the way up and the TB on man it was loud and it did like yours sometimes it would squell and sometimes it didnt duno i guess its a mystery

drdx after thinking about it that's what i come up with. i hope i didn't seem rude that wasn't my intentions at all. :)

Hey, never any offense taken here. If you're going with a talkback, variable is the way to go. It's all fun. I'm thinking that the next popular step past the talkback will be the adjustable audio output scene, no kidding. When I was big into the base scene, 20+ years ago, we used to tap into the modulation wire and run audio leads through audio boards, usually cheap eq's and reverbs, and tailor our audio. These days, echo and modulation level is all there is pretty much. I could see the other parts coming into play as operators look further into ways to sound better. Along with power and antennas, sound quality has to be part of the next keydown frontier. With today's technology, we could all be sounding like radio announcers, not that we don't already. -drdx

nothing wrong with that. one thing i cant stand is listening to someone giving a guy directions and it sounds like he has a rag shoved in his mouth. so if that was available i would recommend it to a lot of people.

ok. back to the original question. WHY AM I SQUEALING? Could be one of many reasons. You say this just started happening recently? If you have been using this same radio in this same truck and it didn't do it before, my first suggestion would be to check your SRW's. Other reasons could be, bad ground, overmodulation (check amc for missing parts), unshielded ext speaker wires (i don't think you have to worry about this with the TR speaker, not sure), and your mic. If you aren't using a noise cancelling mic, it will squeal. With a General Lee, I suggest an Astatic 636L. A Roadking will work also, but I think the 636 has better clarity and tone. You may have to hide your speaker. Face it towards the back of the seat. If the mic can "see" the speaker, it can squeal. Good Luck
